Francesco Petrarca (Arezzo, 1304 – Arquà Petrarca, 19 Juli 1374) war ein italienischer Schriftsteller, Dichter und bekanntestes Werk ist der „Canzoniere“. Sein Vater, der Notar ser Pietro di ser Parenzo, wurde 1302 als Guelfe (Papstanhänger) aus Florenz verbannt. Deshalb verbrachte Petrarca die frühe Kindheit in Incisa, Arezzo und Pisa.
Petrarca gilt als (Mit-)Begründer des Humanismus und war einer der größten Dichter Italiens. Er wollte die Antike als Ganzes wiederbeleben..
